わたしたちが通常、耳にしているのは「全体」の、ほんの一部にすぎません。音というものは、まるで脈絡もなく、しかも同時に、聴こえてくるのです。一つの音をとりだして、それにしかるべき枠にあてはめると、まったく新しい意味を持つことがあります。ここに収録されたシリーズは、あらゆる種類のサウンド・デザインというものに焦点を合わせています。ふだん、気がつかないで遭遇している音が、組み合わせによって、まるで異なった音の「かたまり」として 聴こえてくるでしょう。ちょうど、カメラによって、切りとられた世界のように。
What we normally hear in an environment is often just a small aspect of it's overall design. The world of sound is truly a cluster of unrelated events happening simultaneously.
A particular sound may take on a new meaning given its frame of reference.
The various series that make up this collection of sounds focuses attention on sound design of all kinds. Much like a camera frames a particular situation in time, these recordings aim at these 'clusters', of different sound relationships that we encounter every day without possibly realizing.

救世軍　vs. サックス
Salvation Army vs.Saks Fifth Avenue

NYCでは、クリスマスになると、救世軍があちらこちらに現れて、それがいかにもクリスマスらしい風景です。ここでは、２名の救世軍のボランティアが歌い、鐘を鳴らし、トランペットを吹いています。ところが、途中で、まばゆいばかりの光と音の洪水が、通りのむこうのサックス・フィフス・アヴェニュー（というデパート）で始まります。超ハイテクで、いかにも通俗的なクリスマスソング！こちらには、ローテクの救世軍の演奏！まるで対照的なクリスマスの精神ではありませんか。
In many people's minds, in NYC especially, the true spirit of Christmas is shown by the many Salvation Army volunteers appearing all over the city during this season.
The 2 Salvation Army volunteers here - to my ears at least - embodies this representation of
Christmas - of singing, bells and trumpet playing.
There is a different spirit, possibly better understood, and appears suddenly about halfway through this particular recording - the dazzling light & sound show, taking place just across the street - that is Saks Fifth Avenue. Two very different 'spirits' of Christmas at work.

北風豆腐売り
Tofu Seller & North Wind

遠くから、ゆっくりと近づいてくるのは、豆腐やです。笛を吹いているのが、まるで息をしているよう。聴いていると、こゝろがなごみます。強い北風が、木々の梢をこすってヒューヒュー音を立て、窓の外、路地の片隅から流れてきます。
The distant, then slow approaching tofu seller, with his simple rhythmic horn playing - like breathing almost, has been said to have a very calming effect. The strong wind that whistles around the trees in the early Spring, through an open window, along narrow streets & shrubbery, adds to this passing feeling.

ベルと競りのうた
Tsukiji Bell & Auction Song

築地のセリは、活気に溢れています。気を引くための声、それに応じる声、マグロの売り買いは、やがて賭博場のように昂っていきます。まるで、熱気に溢れ た祝祭のようです。セリをする人の掛け声は、一人一人きわだっています。その歌うようなセリの掛け声、途中で入る鐘の音、音の一大スペクタクルです。
The Tsukiji auctioneer`s rapid songlike rhythm, and intense energy works to draw others into the assembly, literally by reacting with a call and answer, making the 'high stakes' buying & selling of tuna into a heated event. Ever auctioneer has a well developed personalized style, as in this recording, his style is song-like; where the bell establishes the quick rhythm of the whole spectacle.

スプリングクリーニング
Spring Cleaning

「春の大掃除」は、よみがえりであり、めぐる季節の歳時記でもあります。この録音では、美しい春の午後に窓を全開にして、上機嫌でディスコのビートにあわせてピーピー口笛を吹きながら掃除機をかけている様子。眼には映らないけれどもその音から「春」ということを強く喚起させられます。
The yearly effort of `spring cleaning` represents a Renewal, an opening up or welcome change in season. Somehow, listening - voyeuristically even - to a neighbor`s private activities through thin walls makes it, if not an unwelcome experience, a puzzling one because much sounds remain hidden. In this recording, although the actual `cleaning` sounds are inaudible, the muffled improvisational whistling and the generic disco beat seems to evoke that feeling of springtime renewal.

退屈した客引き男
Bored Roper


ニュージャージーの名物のひとつに、ボードウォークに連なるさまざまな景品を当てるゲームの出店があります。いたるところから、「客引き」の声が、聴こえてきます。マイクロフォンとスピーカーを使って、なんとか客を呼び込もうとしています。しかし、あいにく誰もそれに関心を示そうとしません。彼は、独りごとのようにくり返しつづけます。まるで、自分をたのしませるかのように。
With the many games that string along New Jersey`s famous boardwalks, an ubiquitous sound heard throughout are the so-called `ropers`, equipped with microphone and loudspeakers, who tempt passersby in to try at their games. This particular `roper` isn`t succeeding very well in drawing customers. However in broadcasting his repeated, almost interior-monologue, he is entertaining himself... and maybe a few others.

地下鉄オペラ
Subway Opera

オペラというのは、もともと「ドラマティックなかたち」のことを意味しました。音楽だけでなく、さまざまな方法によって、劇的感情をつたえようとするものということです。ここに収録されているのは、NYCの地下鉄の駅で、一人の女性がおもちゃのようなキーボードを弾きながら、歌うアリアです。地下鉄の騒音が、まるでオーケストレーションのように響きます。
The word `Opera` originally refers to simply a `dramatic form`, in which the emotional content is conveyed to the audience as much through music as through other means. Here a woman sings an aria on a subway platform, playing a simple Casio keyboard, and is accompanied by some of NYC`s distinct subway ...orchestrations.
